WARDOGS weather guide: how rain works, how often it appears and what about night and fog

Rain is picked at random on map change and lasts the whole match. What it does to visibility, sound, fire and vehicles, and what is known about night and fog.

With Season 2 on 15 October 2026, WARDOGS got its first new weather: rain. This guide explains when rain appears, what BULKHEAD says it changes in a match and how to adapt. At the end, we separate what has officially been said about night, fog and snow from what is only being discussed. As of 26 October 2026.

When it rains

On the Season 2 launch day, the official WARDOGS Updates account explained that rain is a randomised weather event on map change, just like the other lighting and weather scenarios in Early Access. Players should see rain within 24 hours in all regions.

Back in September, the studio clarified that rain is an additional weather state per map and not a dynamic event mid-match. A match either starts in the rain or stays dry. A switch from sunshine to thunderstorm during a round is not planned, even though the teaser trailer initially gave that impression.

BULKHEAD has not published a probability per map change. Players in the Steam discussions roughly guess one in five rotations, but that is only a guess based on a few rounds.

Rain on community servers

Community admins can reload the map through their server's RCON panel with a fixed time of day and weather. One server host documents an option for late daylight with rain that takes effect after the current match ends. Servers that always or never offer rain are therefore possible. Ideally, the server description tells you how it is set up.

What rain changes in a match

According to the Season 2 patch notes:

  • Surfaces, vehicles and characters become visibly wet.
  • Rain sounds different depending on the surface and where you are: under cover, indoors, inside a vehicle or in the open.
  • If a roof is destroyed, the rain comes through.
  • Heavier rain brings thunder. Every player on the server hears the same strike at the same moment from the same direction, loud enough to mask footsteps.
  • Spotting range is reduced.
  • Molotov fire burns weaker in the rain.

In the 9 October preview, the studio also described changed visibility and engagement ranges. There are no specific metre or percentage values for visibility or spotting range.

Vehicles and aircraft

For vehicles, the patch notes only say that they look wet and that rain sounds different inside. BULKHEAD has not announced changed driving physics on wet ground, worse cockpit visibility or restrictions for helicopters in the rain. Pilots should still expect ground targets to be harder to pick out because of the reduced spotting range.

How to play in the rain

These tips are our reading of the official effects, not instructions from the studio:

  • Rely less on footsteps. During thunder in particular, an enemy can close in unnoticed; equally, you can use the moment to reposition.
  • Expect shorter engagements. Close and medium-range weapons gain value, and long-range spotting becomes harder.
  • A roof audibly dampens the rain. Under cover, you hear your surroundings better.
  • Do not count on Molotovs as reliable area denial in the rain.

Graphics preset and fairness

Shortly after launch, players in the Steam forum reported that the lowest graphics preset, Potato, turns off rain, fog effects and sometimes even rain and thunder sounds. So far this rests only on player reports, and we have not found a response from the studio. If you want to experience rain as intended or rely on the thunder, choose a higher preset. Our settings guide covers the basics of graphics options.

Night, fog and snow

  • Night: asked about night battles in September, Brammer answered "Season 3." That is a development target, not a feature list. As Season 3 is now set to come earlier, it is open whether night will be part of it.
  • Fog: BULKHEAD has not announced fog as a weather type. The fogging officially described since Season 2 refers to the Level 4 helmet while sprinting, not the weather.
  • Snow: only appears in community discussions. There is no official announcement.

According to the studio, WARDOGS already rotates between different lighting and weather scenarios in Early Access. Which ones besides rain is not documented.
