WARDOGS tank guide: unlocking, buying and countering the L2A6, T-72B3, Gepard and SPH-2
What tanks cost in WARDOGS, which Driver level unlocks them, what each tank is for and how infantry counter them with the MAAWS, RPG and mines.
Updated:
Tanks are among the most powerful and most expensive tools in WARDOGS. Season 2 added the T-72B3 and the Flakpanzer Gepard and raised prices sharply. This guide explains which tracked vehicles exist, what they cost, when you unlock them and how to fight them as infantry. All figures come from the official Season 2 patch notes of 14 October 2026. As of 1 November 2026.
The tracked vehicles at a glance
- L2A6: the main battle tank at the end of the Driver track. It costs 22,000 dollars per purchase, up from 14,000 in Season 1.
- T-72B3: new main battle tank in Season 2. Slower than the L2A6, but cheaper and slightly more fuel-efficient. It costs 16,000 dollars.
- Flakpanzer Gepard: new anti-air vehicle for 14,000 dollars, built to counter helicopters.
- SPH-2: artillery, worth an 8,000 dollar reward when destroyed. Since Season 2, artillery gives Driver XP.
Since Season 2, tracked vehicles feel heavier: less floaty in the air and less bouncy on landing.
Which level unlocks tanks?
Tanks belong to the Driver track. Since Season 2, these levels and unlock costs apply:
- T-72B3: Driver level 20, 250,000 dollars.
- Flakpanzer Gepard: Driver level 25, 300,000 dollars.
- SPH-2: Driver level 31, 350,000 dollars. It used to sit on the WARDOG track at level 90.
- L2A6: still the end of the Driver track. In Season 1 it was at Driver level 35; the Season 2 patch notes do not state a new level explicitly. Check the progression screen.
After the Season 2 launch, BULKHEAD admitted that many players reached tanks too early. An exploit for fast Driver XP was closed and Driver progression slowed. In the developer podcast, the team called a 44 percent share of drivers unsustainable and considered unlocking tanks later. Nothing had been decided as of this article.
Is a tank worth it?
A tank ties up a lot of money. A destroyed L2A6 pays the enemy 11,000 dollars, a T-72B3 8,000 dollars. Plan accordingly:
- Only buy a tank once you can fund several replacements. A loss without reserves sets you far back.
- Drive with a crew or alongside infantry. Alone, a tank is a juicy target for anti-tank weapons.
- The T-72B3 is the cheaper choice if you want to limit risk. The L2A6 is faster but costs 6,000 dollars more per purchase.
- Plan for fuel. According to the studio, the T-72B3 is slightly more economical.
The Fieldkit money calculator helps you plan purchase price and reserve against your income.
Countering tanks as infantry
BULKHEAD does not officially recommend a particular tactic, but these tools are available at the vendor:
- RPG-7 for 1,800 dollars and MAAWS for 2,400 dollars. Since Season 2, the MAAWS sits at Support level 18.
- AT mines on roads. The Fieldkit catalog lists them at 650 dollars.
- C4 with remote detonator, on the Assault track at level 4 since Season 2.
Work as a team: one player spots, several fire at the same time from different directions. Our guide to three playstyles with the MAAWS, Verba and AT mines shows how players organise vehicle hunting. Since Season 2, destroying armed variants pays much more than unarmed ones.
Air defence with the Gepard
The Gepard is the answer to helicopters such as the Havoc and Little Bird. Driving it protects your team and base from the air, but it is a target for anti-tank weapons itself. Do not park it in the open on a hill; keep it close to cover and friendly infantry. Our helicopter guide explains how pilots avoid air defence.
