WARDOGS voice chat and microphone not working: how to get squad comms back
Nobody hears you in WARDOGS or voice chat drops out? Scoreboard and the U key, Windows default microphone, 44,100 Hz and error 5003: the steps players confirm.
Updated:
Squad comms often decide whether a push in WARDOGS succeeds. All the more annoying when the microphone works in Discord but nobody hears you in the game, or when voice chat goes completely silent after a failed server join. In the Season 1 changelog from 9 September, Bulkhead announced improvements: voice that cut out permanently after a failed join now recovers, reliability under load was improved and there is a visible communication status. For everything that still fails afterwards, we collected the community solutions from the Steam forum. Status: 19 September 2026.
Step 1: Rebuild the voice connection in the game
The quickest test takes less than a minute: open the scoreboard in the match and press U. The first press disconnects the voice connection, the second reconnects. Watch the status indicator and repeat until “Connected” appears. This trick is the most frequently confirmed solution when voice chat has dropped mid-match.
Two things that are not bugs: squad voice only works when you are actually in a squad with other players, not as a faction-wide channel. And without the push-to-talk key held, the microphone stays muted; check in the settings which key is bound and whether it collides with another action.
Step 2: Set the Windows default microphone
Several players report that the game ignores the microphone selection in its own options and uses the Windows default device instead. So set your preferred microphone as the default in Windows:
- Settings, System, Sound, Input: select the correct device.
- Alternatively search for “Change system sounds”, Recording tab, select the device, “Set Default”.
- Additionally check under Settings, Privacy & security, Microphone that desktop apps are allowed to access the microphone.
A Bluetooth headset that connects on the side can push your wired microphone out of the default slot. The same applies to virtual recording devices from headset software such as chat-mix functions or Voicemeeter: disable them as a test and select the physical microphone.
Step 3: Check sample rate and level
Two details from the forum that made the difference for individual players:
- Set the microphone format in the device properties (Advanced tab) to CD quality at 44,100 Hz instead of DVD quality at 48,000 Hz.
- Set the input level in the sound settings to 100 percent, then repeat the microphone test in the game’s audio menu.
If you have several input devices, switch to a different microphone in the game as a test, apply, and switch back. That re-triggered detection for several users.
Step 4: Error 5003, “failed to connect to communication services”
This message appears when the game runs but the voice service cannot be reached. According to forum reports WARDOGS uses the external provider Vivox for this. The cause is then in the network connection, not the microphone:
- Check VPN, DPI filters and firewall and add the domain vivox.com as an exception. The thread mentions the address ranges 85.236.96.0/21 and 85.236.104.0/23.
- Connect via a mobile hotspot as a test.
- Change server or restart the game: if the voice service fails on one server, it affects all players there.
No fix that works for everyone is known for 5003; the original reporter had no success even after the exceptions. If the error only occurs occasionally, an outage at the provider is likely.
If others hear you but you hear nobody
Check the voice chat volume in the game separately from the master volume and whether the output device in Windows matches your headset. A newly connected Bluetooth device can also switch the output. Change the output device in Windows and restart the game afterwards so the change reliably takes effect.
Our order in short
- Scoreboard, press U twice until it says “Connected”.
- In a squad, push-to-talk key bound and free of conflicts.
- Correct microphone as Windows default, virtual devices and Bluetooth off.
- Microphone access allowed for desktop apps.
- 44,100 Hz and 100 percent level, reselect the microphone in the game.
- For error 5003: allow vivox.com in VPN and firewall, test a hotspot, change server.
