WARDOGS error code WD-L018: repair Elytra, verify files, add an antivirus exception
WD-L018 has appeared more often since Update 0.1.2. There is no official fix, but a community routine with Elytra repair, file verification and an antivirus exception helps.
Updated:
After Update 0.1.2 on 30 September 2026, more players reported the error code WD-L018, often with an attached identifier made of letters and numbers. Some saw the code before the patch as well. As of this article, BULKHEAD has not published its own fix for WD-L018. The procedure below comes from the community and was picked up by MP1st. It is a workaround, not a guarantee. As of 23 October 2026.
How it differs from other WD-L codes
WD-L020 after the Windows update KB5124010 was officially fixed in Update 0.1.2 and has its own article. For general launch errors such as WD-L004, WD-L014 or anti-cheat rejections, our launch troubleshooting guide is the better starting point. Always write down the complete code including its suffix before changing anything.
Step 1: repair Elytra as administrator
- In your Steam library, right-click WARDOGS and choose Properties.
- Go to Installed Files and click Browse.
- Find elytra_setup.exe in the game folder.
- Right-click it, choose Run as administrator, then select Repair.
Elytra is WARDOGS' anti-cheat. Do not download the file from anywhere else; only use the one in your game folder.
Step 2: restart and verify files
Restart the PC after the repair. Then open WARDOGS' properties in Steam again and choose Verify integrity of game files under Installed Files. Wait until Steam has finished and downloaded any missing files.
Step 3: antivirus exception
In the community report, an exception for the game file WardogsClient-Win64-Shipping.exe helped with Kaspersky. Other antivirus programs may behave similarly. Proceed carefully:
- Only add the exception for this one file in the WARDOGS install folder, not for whole drives or folders like Downloads.
- Do not disable your antivirus permanently.
- Check your antivirus quarantine for blocked game files and run the file verification again afterwards.
This advice comes from the community report, not from BULKHEAD.
Step 4: test in a match
Launch WARDOGS through Steam and join a match. Reaching the main menu alone tells you little. If the error stays away, you have probably found the cause. If it returns, note whether it appears at launch, when joining a server or mid-match.
If WD-L018 persists
Report the case via Team17 support or the Steam Report a Problem forum. Include the full code with suffix, your Windows version from winver, your antivirus and the steps you have already tried. According to reports, WD-L018 is still awaiting an official fix; future patch notes may change this procedure.
